BUSY, BUSY, BUSY!
I've just come back from the District's Writing Assessment Workshop. The end of that workshop, the Native teachers were asked to volunteer to look at our language programs because some of our sites are at the end of their five-year plan and those communities are going to do some evaluating and decide whether to keep their language programs or change the language delivery of programs. Some interesting issues were raised, one of them being Technology and how we have to keep up with our younger generations "tech world" and Skip, your name came up as the person who may be able to help us to keep abreast with our students tech knowledge. So don't be surprised if and when you receive calls from my corner of the world.

Frustrated Storyteller
Hello everyone;
I have a wonderful panraven story that I can not, or should I say, am not able to share with the rest of you...for some reason, when the dialog box comes up, it does not allow me to do any pasting. Perhaps, someone can enlighten me with some computer secrets. I have thought of going on someone else's computer to see if it'll work, but in the meantime, my story still sits @ www.panraven.com/visitor/VisitViewStory.epage?sp= ...

TECH FLASH
hello everyone! Remember some blog entries ago when I mentioned that our School District uses a rubicon site that compiles reading and writing lessons for anyone in our district to share with? Anyhow, like with any new and improved ideas...I thought it was a wonderful way for each of us to see what the other sites are doing as far as writing activities were concerned, but I just haven't the time to go back and check it out yet. Now, I hear that its going to be implemented by next year that we all publish our lessons on most of the content areas through this site...I even forgot my username and password! I guess we'll have another Teach Day on this application at the beginning of next semester. In the meantime, I'm sitting here wondering when I'll have the time to do that.

Halloween
Oh my goodness, Halloween is in the middle of the week! I'll be so wound up that my students will have to try and keep up with me, I refuse to it the other way around. We carved our pumpkin today, we still need to carve out the eyes...I'm saving that for last. We have little "sense" activities to go with each of our carvings. We experimented on what raw pumpkin tastes like...so far everyone likes the taste.

Slip, slide and away
Well, our snow is gone. We have ice. As dangerous as that sounds, I am very glad it rained, because that means my water tank is replenished. For those of us that don't have running water, the rain is a blessing. You should have seen me yesterday, I was like a drill sergeant. I wanted that water in the water containers before the area steambath houses started firing up. When the smoke from gets into the water supply, we can't use it for drinking water anymore. On another note, our freeze-up is weird this year. The big main river is all iced up now, but our little slough, Kuiggluk, is still open. Usually, the sloughs freeze first before the big river freezes. I hate traveling this time of the year, because seems like we end up waiting at the airports forever.

Winter is around the corner
We've had our first snow over the weekend and it's actually sticking! Our river hasn't froze yet though. We still have our die-hards still running up and down the river, we even have some snow-goers riding their machines up and down the road...I hope they realize that that messes up their slides. Anyhow, we have snow and it looks like its here to stay...is time flying fast for you all?

Dilemma #400,550.
I spent last week at Fairbanks. I managed to download most of the pictures I wanted to use for my "Sense of Place" story. However, some of the pictures have low or high res issues and I'm assuming that if I use those pictures with those issues, some of my pictures will look blurry or grainy. So my dilemma now is to figure a way to fix those pictures with res issues. If I can't ...I'm back to uploading some more pictures one at a time...

Number-itis
Hello, this week has flown by so fast, and here I thought I'd be able to get most of my assignments out of the way...only, our Math 205 Intensive has really stretched out brains. The part of the brain that doesn't get exercised is really working hard. The class is wonderful because it focuses on how we teach children about math concepts . How our attitudes about math tend to override some of the way we teach the children. The homeworks are killers but they manage to get done. You should see my eyes now...I look like I haven't slept for days.

Hunting
Just last week, Skip posted a question on how student's absence due to hunting is handle at our sites. First of all, I think its different for each site, for instance, at our site those students that are planning on going hunting with their parent are encouraged to complete a pre-arranged absence form. This year the school is using the eligibility form for sports as this pre-arrangement absence form, this way the teachers are all aware that the student was granted subsistence leave and therefore is considered an excused absence. An excused absence allows you to an extension on your classwork, so when the student comes back from hunting, they have to get all caught up with all their classwork. As far as employees are concerned, it all depends on how much leave you have accumulated. If you don't have enough leave to cover your absence and you are willing to take leave without pay, happy hunting. Most employees usually ask for a Friday off and take off on Thursday evening and come back late Sunday night.

Brain Freeze
Hello my fellow bloggers. I'm very close to a melt down!!! Every week I have to hunt this site down so that I could compose my thoughts. Last week I gave up trying to find this bloggerspot and finally today I remembered how to access it only to wonder what it is that I wanted to say. School is in full bloom now, our first big WRITING assessment is scheduled for next week and here I have my little kindergartners still trying to perfect their drawings. We have been experiencing August weather...rain, rain, and more rain. I still need to take my camera to take pictures of my community. I keep saying I'll do that this weekend, but my weekends have been busy with berries and fishcamp cleaning duties. Well, until next week...happy days!

Am I tech-savvy or what!
Last week on Thursday our school site let out early for an in-service. Guess what? the program the district is implementing sounds so much like this bloggerspot!!! The only difference is that the site is just for our district's use and it only covers writing lessons and ideas to use for different levels. The district is hoping to add all content areas in the future. Now, between postings for this spot and writing for my rubicon program I am going computer nuts! It just makes me smile, when I think back decades ago, how I got so frustrated with everything getting computerized in our schools and now I can't seem to do anything without the aid of this laptop.

REFRESH
Hello Fellow ED 429-ers! Wow! I had to remember how to get here. School has begun and already I am swamped with lots of things to do and thinking that there never seems to be enough time in a day. We actually have a new site administrator and are very busy learning his style of operation. In the meantime...I can see how important it is to keep up with all the tech stuff we learned, especially since we don't have each other to remind us how to log into our blogspots.

Magdalenians-the sequel
These are the same pictures as my previous posting, only I have included comments. So enjoy.
I have yet to figure out why we need the two different flickr sites. I'll have to see if the blogspot site can show my pictures without the flickrslidr. I may end up sending in another blog entry.

Learn as I do
This is just to learn the steps of transferring from site to site with my sets. As soon as I'm done with this...I'll go back to my flickr site to do some updating and re-post this set with text - qaa?

Powerpoint
I actually had fun playing around with the powerpoint program. Once I figured out some of the slideshow effects (accidently), I was humming. I know that sound can be added, but I just haven't figured out how to do that yet. Perhaps someone could point me to the right direction.

I'm computerized!
Hello people! I'm Magdalena from Kwethluk, which is a skip and a hop away from Bethel, Alaska. My husband and I have five children and seven grandchildren. Of the five children we have, two are still depended on us.
